NOMADIC WAX /AFRICAN UNDERGROUND PANEL DISCUSSION AT THE ROTUNDA GALLERY

Nomadic Wax, Rotunda Gallery and Celebrate Brooklyn present a conversation on: AFRICAN HIP-HOP, YOUTH AND POLITICS

Wednesday, August 2nd 7 pm - 9 pm
Rotunda Gallery
The Rotunda Gallery is located at 33 Clinton Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201
Directions: 2,3,4,5,M,N, and R trains to Court Street/Borough Hall • tel 718.855.7882

Brooklyn, NY (July 20, 2006) -Brooklyn's Rotunda Gallery is pleased to present A CONVERSATION ON AFRICAN HIP-HOP, YOUTH AND POLITICS on Wednesday, August 2 at 7 pm .

The event is organized by Nomadic Wax in conjunction with Celebrate Brooklyn's annual African Music Festival. Acclaimed drummer and Nomadic Wax founder Ben Herson will moderate the discussion which will feature pan-African hip-hop MCs Chosan of Sere Leone, Saaba Saaba of Uganda and Toni Blackman, USA. Admission is free; for information, call 718.875.4047 x11.
The event kicks off a week-long celebration that will include the African Underground Allstars' performance in Prospect Park during the Celebrate Brooklyn African Festival on Saturday, August 5 at 2 pm . This annual celebration of African music, food and culture is a cross-continental affair that will you dancing all day. The event is headlined by the Congolese rumba supergroup Kékélé. The mysterious masked Nigerian Lágbájá, heir apparent to Fela Kuti's Afrobeat throne, leads the rest of the lineup, which includes Madagascar-born and Gabon-raised R&B singer Razia, and Martino Atangana & African Blue Note, whose fusion of funk, jazz and an array of West African styles throws a hint of NYC into the mix. The African Underground Allstars' NYC engagement comes to a close on Sunday, August 6 from 8 pm - 3 am with an East African Benefit Concert at Galapagos Art Space in Williamsburg.

The Gallery's current exhibition Andrew Dosunmu: The African Game , organized by Isolde Breilmaeir and Knox Robinson, provides a fitting backdrop for this engaging conversation about African life, music and culture. The exhibition has been extended through August 5 and features never before seen photographs, video footage, and a site-specific installation by photographer Andrew Dosunmu inspired by Dosunmu and Robinson's forthcoming book project The African Game (published by PUMA ® North America and distributed by powerHouse Books, 2006). Using photography and narrative, Dosunmu and Robinson capture the unique culture and character of African fútbol through eyes of local communities, fans and players on the field. From Senegal and Cameroon to Ghana and Egypt, Dosunmu's photos effortlessly shift between the soccer field and the street, capturing candid moments that reveal Africa's passion for fútbol. Robinson's narrative further frames the story, elucidating the continent's deep-rooted ties to the game.

In anticipation of the panel, Isolde Brielmaier, Rotunda Gallery's new Director and Chief Curator, pointed out, "The panel of stellar MCs of the African Underground Allstars is a perfect complement to our current exhibition of Andrew Dosunmu's photography. This collaboration with Celebrate Brooklyn and Nomadic Wax is also a natural fit, given the evolving direction of Rotunda Gallery. As we strive to reach the international audiences that exists right here in Brooklyn, interdisciplinary programming like this that connects contemporary art and global culture is vital."

Celebrate Brooklyn's African Festival is presented in association with the Museum for African Art and is part of the Washington Mutual Concert Series.

NEW CHANGES ON THE NOMADIC WAX WEBSITE!

Hey folks - there's been some new improvements on the Nomadic Wax web site..

Nomadic Wax Forums Are Up and Running!
Come and join the discussion on Global Hip-Hop, Politics, Production and more. The Nomadic Wax forums are now officially up and running. We've got a handful of members and are looking forward to reading your posts. Please visit us here..

New Video Blog from Senegal...
After having been asked by many people over the years I decided to post some clips from the hours of footage I've taken from Senegal over the years. With some major help from Notorious Film's founder Christina Choe - I've got a decent selection of clips from our 2003 session in Dakar. Visit us at nomadicwax.com and go to the media section - then select VIDEO BLOG SENEGAL 2003 to check the videos.

New Videos the Nomadic Wax site..
In addition to the video blog - we've also got some brand spanking new videos for you (also from Christina Choe.)

1. Music Video for Sen Kumpa "Niawal"
For those of you who dug the sounds of Sen Kumpa's track - Deglu Xel" on African Underground: Hip-Hop Senegal - you're going to flip for this track soon to be released on African Underground: Depths of Dakar.
Check out the video here..

2. Trailer for United Nations of Hip-Hop
We've also got a short trailer for Christina's United Nations of Hip-Hop documentary which is currently being screened at film festivals all over... Check that out here..

SENEGALESE BEAT DOWN PLAYLIST

I've been following Senegalese wrestling for nearly a decade. In my many years of traveling to Senegal I've seen some incredible bouts.

I've been lucky enough to have witnessed the rise of Mohammed Ndao aka Tyson (the wrestler who coined the term 'Boul Fale') when he beat down Manga 2 on July 4th 1999. I was also there when Tapha Gueye got punked by Bombardier and saw the stadium go into a near riot in response.

Every time I go to Dakar - I make a point to go to the matches. For me the combination of the music, mysticism and drama of the wrestling tradition all are just as incredible to watch as the battle itself.

Now imagine my surprise when I looked at the CNN.com website the other day to find a full page spread on this esoteric cultural tradition on their FRONT page.. What!?! Senegalese Wrestling on CNN! Next thing you know they'll be playing Senegalese hip-hop on the Sopranos.. wait.. sorry, happened last week. Forget that.

Although we don't yet have any Senegalese wrestling on the Calabash site - (I've got to get some soon!) - what we DO have for you are the true sounds of Dakar itself that have inspired and been the soundtrack to this incredible martial art and cultural tradition.

Essentially - this mix is a 'what would might hear if you sat in a car rapide from Medina to Thiaorry with the radio blasting the whole time'.

From the mighty slap of the sabar to the guttural raps of BMG 44 - this mix is the true sound of Dakar's inner city. Get ready to rumble...

To hear listen to the playlist click here..

Hey folks..

Big up to everyone who came out for the Revolocity party at Dick Shale's! Crazy times. I don't think I've ever seen so many bike couriers in one place since the opening of Quicksilver. Wild.

Subatomic ripped it up with a special appearance from Noah Shachtman on the bass. Big up to Emch and crew for having me on percussion as always. If you haven't yet checked out the Subatomic release - do yourself a favor and do so NOW. This is some of the dopest stuff coming out of NYC hands down.

Also back in the studio with Eugene Cho from the Escort crew. We've been tracking some more disco drum action for the new LP which is sure to be blazing! These are some seriosly TOUGH disco breaks here. Don't think John Travolta in polyester - we're talking some bad ass "1970's B-Boy battle in the park after dark" kind of action..

Bab Kubwa Media (Tanzania/UK based African Hip-Hop Label) has teamed up with Nomadic Wax for the release of Mapito - the illest Tanzanian Hip-Hop release of 2006..

Mapito brings you 16 Tracks of Swahili Hip Hop, featuring the likes of Tanzanian Bongo Flava legends - Sugu aka Mr 2, Solo Thang and Mr Ebbo, and a host of hot underground Mc's from Dar es Salaam and Arusha.

The project started two years ago when Ralph Godden aka the Funkdisaster, made a visit to Grandmaster Records of Arusha to arrange a remix collaboration between GM Records' artists and various musicians and producers from around the UK.
This was followed by Godden making a second visit to Tanzania, armed with a Laptop and a few mics. With help from Music Crossroads and a few fortunate encounters during Music Maydays B-Connected festival, a host of live underground MC's were recorded.

Another six months of production brought all of this together in the album that is Mapito - a unique combination of Bongo and UK Flava. Hip Hop knows no borders.

Released by Bab Kubwa media and distributed by Nomadic Wax. All profits made from the sale of Maptio will be donated to the World Swim for Malaria Foundation.

IV - East Africa comes to Nomadic Wax!

After years of being in the background of what is considered African music, the Afro-Urban phenomenal has taken root in East Africa. With the help of Swahili Entertainment http://www.swahilientertainment.com and its partner Nomad Wax http://nomadicwax.com, the Afro-Urban genre has been brought to light.

The relationship above has contributed to the upcoming releases of K-G's " THE STORY" and Ousman's " THE RISING SUN" debut albums, both artist are already house hold names in East and Central Africa, they have also been able to get into the top 50 charts in West/Southern Africa and parts of Eastern Europe.

K-G's music most closely resembles that of Seal, Papa Wemba, Bob Marley and Wyclef Jean. His dynamic voice and song arrangement has made him to have an authentic sound. K-G will be embarking on a school's tour in Central Florida to promote his new collabo single feat. Ripstah from the Virgin Islands, the single was sponsored by the State department in a campaign to stop gun violence.

On the other hand Ousman's unique voice has propelled him to be top ranking reggae artist in the East and Central African region.

Both artists come out at a time when real music is making a come back thanks to the growing interest in conscious music.

Check out K-G's live in Florida Video www.k-gmusic.com/movies/kglivevideo.mov

Plus this ground breaking event will be hosted by legendary spoken word artists/hip-hop activist Toni Blackman! Plus an exclusive item raffle to benefit World Up!

Toni Blackman is perhaps one of the foremost artist/activist of her time. Committed to her life's work of elevating the culture of hip hop, Toni has positive lasting impressions on the entire fabric that is hip hop. As a performing poet, as one of the fiercest freestyle MC's, as an educator, and as an educator, Toni was raised the bar for all her peers and colleagues. World Up! & Nomadic Wax are thrilled to work with Toni Blackman on this revolutionary event.

TY released his debut album "Awkward" (on Big Dada/Ninja Tune) to critical acclaim, he has grown from underground mc to an artist who is developing an international reputation. In between working on the all important second album TY is taking time to collaborate with a variety of musicians, he has recently completed tracks with Fela Kuti's drummer Tony Allen for his album which is due out in September which includes TY and Damon Albarn on a track. And in a sense this is what makes TY's music - he allows his complexities and contradictions to shine through, allows us to see him as a multifaceted, awkward, non-boxable individual. It’s an approach backed up by a fierce some technique, one which makes the complex look simple.

AMBASSADOZ were once called 'third-world citizens', while others said we were 'backwards' some even asked if we still lived on trees in Africa. Truth is, with more than 7 years experience of ripping shows, the AMBASSADOZ made of (M.O.A & AKAN) operated solely on the underground. Eventually surfacing in the late 90s as recording artists who knew exactly what their audience wanted and what they wanted was something new. Their creation is hip-hop music that can range from hard-core to afro-funk, becoming hard to lock into a specific genre or category. This distinctive hybrid of sound has the ability to dazzle spectators with their 'switching spit' lingo (rapping in different languages and accents) while commanding the credibility from the hip-hop elite. They bridge the gap between all the different forms of hip-hop vernacular on stage spittin' in English, French, Twi and Pidgin.

Join us for this unique and culturally ground breaking event! Thanks to our sponsors TRACE MAGAZINE, RED STRIPE, CALABASH MUSIC & ADIDAS ORIGINALS! Brought to you by World Up! & Nomadic Wax.

KILLAH PRIEST made his first recorded appearances on Wu Tang Clan albums and side projects. He was featured on, "Liquid Swords," and formed the group Sunz of Man, however his claim to fame came in 1998 with the release of his own album, "Heavy Mental". Born in Brooklyn and raised in Bedford-Stuyvesant and Brownsville, Killah Priest found his passion in hip-hop listening to old-school and new school artists, both famous and local, such as Genius, Onyx's Suave, Eric B. and Rakim.

JEAN GRAE, African native, was born Tsidi Ibrahim to two jazz musicians who deeply influenced her love for music. Grae attended New York City's High School of Performing Arts as a vocal major. Recruited by hip-hop artist, Ocean, Grae (then known as What? What?) joined a hip-hop group, Natural Resource, which released the 1997 underground classic, "Negro League Baseball". In the summer of 2002, Jean Grae released her debut album, "Attack of the Attacking Things".

CHOIR BOY , 23 from Newark, New Jersey, has had a profound love for music since the third grade. He graduated from Newark's Performing Arts High School in 2000, which guided him in becoming a well-rounded musician, adept at reading and writing music, and playing the organ, piano, guitar , and various percussion instruments. Choir Boy's unique genre-crossing style was influenced by artists varying from Paul Simon, Marvin Gaye, and Curtis Mayfield to Jay-Z, Notorious B.I.G, and Dr. Dre.

CIELO, Colombian-born has been writing for years and years. Her writing has grown from poetry, to slam, to rap in English, and then to rap in her native Spanish. Cielo recently began incorporating "Reggaeton" into her art, and is said to be an innovator of the Spanish Hip Hop world. She has been influenced by Cypress Hill, Guru, A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, and Lauryn Hill, as well as many others.

JOCHRIS, born in South Ozone Park, Queens, New York as Jordan Christopher, is known for his skills as an MC, producer, engineer, director, and video editor that challenges contemporary hip-hop. He began working as the in-house producer and engineer at Lyricist Lounge/MIC Media, where he got the chance to produce hip-hop megastars like Slick Rick and Talib Kweli. His solo debut is entitled, "The Great Scott Project.

CHOSAN was born in the country of Sierra Leone, West Africa. When living in London, Chosan got his big break when a DJ at Kiss FM London received his homemade freestyle CD and invited him to rap live on the air. Chosan has also done warm up spots for artists like Dead Prez and Busta Rhymes. Chosan started Silverstreetz Entertainment and has since released his professional debut, "The Beautiful Side of Misery" Volume 1. Chosan also recently teamed up with hip-hop legend Kanye West for his latest video “Diamonds are Forever”.

NEMISS, the Chicago born and Brooklyn based hip-hop and soul lyricist/artist has toured with Black Sheep and opened for artists like The Roots, Common, and Gang Starr. She also performed in Def Poet, Stacey Ann Chin's, "Jagged Ledges". Nemiss has also since received a Bachelor's degree in political science at the University of Chicago, where she was heavily involved with theater and the Deeply Rooted Dance Theater. She has released a single, "Bottom Line," and has a debut album in the works.

VI - NEW PRODUCT IN THE NOMADIC WAX STORE

Nomadic Wax is proud to announce the release of the 8th album from East Africa’s most regarded and influential hip-hop artist, SUGU (aka Mr II) - Social Misfits Entertainment.

Hailing from Tanzania (locally referred to as Bongo) SUGU has been actively involved in the hip-hop scene for well over a decade now.

As well as winning various pan-African music accolades, performing at numerous international festivals including Womad, Mundial, etc. plus organising the now renowned annual Tanzania Hiphop Summit, he has also released a critically acclaimed album in nearly each of the last 7 years, with sales fast approaching a million units.

His observant narratives, canny wordplay and flamboyant delivery has seen him commonly referred to as Bongo’s nearest equivalent to Nas or even Jay-Z.

Sugu’s latest instalment draws on an international outlook and is sprinkled with universal appeal and originality throughout. Remaining true to his Bongo foundations Sugu delivers the album in his native language, Swahili – the African language of choice for Hollywood blockbusters, for this much anticipated epic.

The self-titled album comfortably sits at that mid-point between social-consciousness and lyrical bravado.

A diverse array of topics concerning himself, his country, its people and Africa are documented in an engaging and entertaining manner, i.e., prostitution (the enlightening Sista’z Song), emigration plights (the amusing Mamtoni), the street-children epidemic (the touching Watoto Wa Mitaani), etc.

The buzz on this album in Tanzania and other Swahili speaking regions has been incredible and it’s no wonder that his eighth album is already hailed as his best to date.

The jump-off single Moto Chini and its accompanying video are currently commanding domestic airwaves and has, perhaps unsurprisingly, become an anthem in clubs throughout Bongo and the rest of East Africa.

This firing announcement could easily be proceeded by any of the 9 other potential singles featured on the album, though current radio and club favourites, Alright and Mikono Juu prevail – (Look out for the upcoming remixes as featured on the upcoming double A-side!)

Production on the album comes courtesy of fellow East-African, the renowned UK-residing Sir Prestige (Social Misfits). The Kenyan beatsmith provides a succulent array of hip-hop soundscapes alongside contributions from 9-Lives (Stone Circle, UK) and Kiboy (BlaO Entertainment, Sweden).

Featured guests include Balozi who represents Bongo Flava from New York, Samia X (of legendary Bongo outfit, Kwanza Unit), up-coming UK songstress Tina Roberts and East Africa’s No. 1 radio, club and TV personality, DJ Pinye.

…Tracklisting…
1. Kwenya Mbio
2. Alright
3. Sistaz Song
4. Nishai
5. Ningeweza

Born in a military hospital in South America, Immortal Technique was brought to the United States in the early 80's while a civil war was breaking out in his native Peru. The US supported puppet democracy and Guerilla factions were locked in a bitter struggle which ended like most do in Latin America, with the military and economic aid of the State Dept. through channels like the CIA. Although he had escaped the belligerent poverty and social turmoil of life in the 3rd world, he was now residing in Harlem which had its own share of drama. Growing up on the streets of New York, the young man became enamored with Hip Hop culture, writing graffiti and starting to rhyme at an early age.

Established in the underground circuit Tech began another round of dealing with record labels unwilling to see the direction of his brutally honest and cultured rhymes. He decided to continue with what had been so successful, his hand to hand out the trunk hustle. In the post 9.11 climate, as the music industry crumbled, Immortal Technique built on the truth with a hardcore brand of street politics. Being featured in XXL, The Washington Post, and having been titled with the Hip Hop quotable in The Source (10/03) for his sophomore independent release Revolutionary Vol.2 was just the beginning..

SLUM NATION
Underground African Hip-Hop Keeps the Code Universal
by Charles Mudede

VARIOUS ARTISTS
African Underground: Vol. 1, Hip-Hop Senegal
(Nomadic Wax)
According to the New Left Review, the present, global urban population is 3.2 billion. This means half the world's population now lives in cities, and it's predicted that by the next generation that number will rise to 4 billion. In the context of these developments, hiphop's current global popularity is understandable. It has as much to do with the general dominance of American cultural forms as the fact that hiphop is an entirely urban art. Hiphop was born in the very same kinds of slums that in the near future will be home for much of the world's population.

On the new compilation African Underground: Vol. 1, Hip-Hop Senegal, the concerns of urbanized African rappers correspond directly with the concerns of early (1979-1983) and modern (1984-1993) American hiphop. Rap songs of the past that responded to what Goldie called "inna city pressure" (corrupt law enforcement, extreme poverty, poor housing and education) now offer the tools and technologies (in the Foucault sense) with which Africans can express their present experiences in the ever-expanding slums of Senegal. The world is fast becoming the Bronx.

Though their material conditions are miserable, the sonic culture of Senegal's rappers and DJs is far from impoverished. Over the past four years, there has been an explosion of talent, an abundance of energy and ingenuity--a very small part of which can be heard on African Underground. Not only is the music political, but, as exampled by songs like "Missalu Aduna" (Omzo) and "Art Attendan" (Yat Fu), it is filled with beauty. For Senegal's youth, hiphop is still a "black CNN" (source of information) and "in the club" (a source of pleasure).

REVIEWS
"African Underground" has made the EDITORS PICK in smother.net, Ghettoblaster Magazine and Online Radio Show Jaywhy.com http://www.jaywhay.com
Thanks to all of these excellent magazines and online radio shows for supporting Nomadic Wax and African Hip-Hop!
Review taken from smother.net
"Africa’s underground hip-hop scene is as rich as the continent itself. "African Underground" accomplishes the difficult task of getting African MCs an opportunity to be heard outside of Senegal, where the artists are drawn from. Incredibly easy to digest and sure to get your head bopping despite being in Senegal’s native language of Wolof. It’s only a matter of time before the album makes proper waves in the hip-hop scene in America and Europe. The lyrics typically are political and socially conscious and showcase the talent of these young MCs."

• First of all, Peace and Respect to the Mighty Afrika Bambaattaa, The 5th Universal Zulu Nation, IHX, and the National Hip-Hop Convention for holding it down and spreading the good vibes and knowledge last week. That event is THIS THURS JULY 1ST IN PROSPECT PARK! The MCs will be backed by the notorious Nomadic Wax Breakbeat Ensemble and is sure to be off the hook.

Just talked with the guys in Dakar. Lele said Shiffai is holding it down with the top slot in Dakar! Slam Revolution, BMG 44 and Omzo go into the studio in a few weeks

Nomadic News 8-21-03
Back home! I miss it over there already. Now I’m off to cousin Dan Cantor’s (Notable Productions) wedding.

Nomadic News 8-19-03
Only a day left and I’m still recording. Just recorded Fumalat of Bat Blin D. This guy was like the icing in the cake. He sounds like Brian Johnson of AC/DC off the “Dirty Deeds” album (except he’s rapping in Wolof.) Do I hear a Wolof remix of Back in Black in the future? Could this be the “Hells Bells” of Senegalese rap?

Nomadic News 8-15-03
Went to what I think was the best hip-hop show I’ve ever seen in DK. Tigrim Bi, Sul Suli, Wa Geuble, and Awadi. I mean everyone was playing this thing. That is until a monsoon came and we split to save the equipment from drowning in my room (hole in the ceiling). The rain came down so hard the road was a river so strong I lost my shoes (no joke). I’m happy to say however that the studio was fine.

Nomadic News 8-13-03
Christina Choe from Notorious Productions film co just joined our camp. She’ll be here for a few months doing a film on worldwide hip-hop. Looking forward to introducing her to everyone.

Nomadic News 8-03-03
More recording.. Just did some dope shit with Omzo. I swear this guy is going to blow up here. His flow is so original. I had never heard him rhyme in English before and he is no joke.

Nomadic News 8-01-03
Another radio interview at Temoin with Keyti. I just heard some of his new shit for the new album. Dope, dope dope..

Nomadic News 7-31-03
Tons of recording! I’ve had like two days off to chill so far. All is well except there's a new family of birds who now live in the roof. If you listen to some of the tracks really, really, really closely you can hear them. There’s also a mouse that I call “Pico” who lives in the room with me. I’m never lonely that for sure.

Nomadic News 7-29-03
Interview with Coco Jean at Nostalgie. Jojo, Gofu and Momo rip the shit up with a 1-hour freestyle. Got all that shit on video. I’ll try and upload that when I get back to the States.

Nomadic News 7-25-03
Already recorded about 20 new groups so far. Tons of new groups over here. Just met up with Tigrim Bi, one of the illest crews I’ve ever recorded in Dakar. I swear Jah (the lead guy) sounds like he’s from fucking Brooklyn.. No joke.

Nomadic News 7-23-03
Radio Interview at radio Temoin.

Nomadic News 7-21-03
The new shit is blowing off the hook here! Brought by some singles to the WALF, Nostalgie, Radio Temoin and a bunch of others. We’re getting regular rotation all around. Shiffai is already at # 5 at Nostalgie and Yat Fu’s “Art Attendan” is close behind it.

Nomadic News 7-19-03
No problems coming over. Before I got on the plane some older women were having trouble with the airline. The airline people spoke some French but the women were from the country and only spoke Wolof. A little Wolof translation action and the problem was solved. The airline was so grateful that they hooked me up with 1st class baby! I think I might try and rock the whole Wolof bit at the airport more often.

Nomadic News 7-14-03
Time flies when you’re having fun. Damn I leave for DK tonight! Should be a kick ass trip. I’ve got more shit with me this time then I though I would (as usual). Two computers, a bunch of mic pres and an AT4050 can get pretty heavy when you’re trying to pull it off as a carry on. I’ll let you all know what the word is in DK when I get settled.

100% the mixes are all done and ready for mastering! Glad we waited for Dan to get the Neve console ready for this mixdown. (If you want to know what it’s like to carry a Neve up 3 light of stairs drop him a line!) It is unreal what a difference it makes to have your shit mixed on the fucking Cadillac of mixing consoles.

Nomadic News 7-01-03
Nomadic Wax is proud to announce that the mix for the 1st compilation is near complete! I know the boys in Dakar are gonna be happy about this one. Cousin Dan Cantor (Notable Productions) will do the mixes on the Neve with a little help from our good friend Jesse Cannon (Cannon Sound Foundation) out in NJ. The finished product should be done in about 2 weeks!
